Beautiful, bright, cool, breezy. Arose 7:30 A.M. Breakfast and Devotions. Read.To Park Street Congregational. Walk. Dinner. Nap. Study. To 31 Norway St. after M.L.Y. Supper at Ginter's "Seville." To Old South Church. Dr. Gordon preached on "Youth and World Vision." Walked, Talked etc. To bed 12:15 P.M. Thankful for friends.

Great Revelation (concerning) de aetate mei amici puellae [translation: the age of my girl friend] M.L.Y.

Stanford's Latin is flawed, but he meant to say that she was slightly older than he--August to November, or three whole months. He teased her about that for years.

But he is calling her his girl friend, which may be girlfriend or just friend who is a girl. That remains to be seen.

About this blog . . .

I've created this blog to make a record of the hand-written journals of Stanford Stillman Closson (1900-1982), who was in his life a Methodist Minister, grandfather, father, brother, husband, son, cousin, nephew and friend. This is the fifth installment of Date Book, covering 1923 (the first four cover 1919-1922). For as long as seems practical, I will record subsequent years (they continue into the 1970s). I'm matching the days--January 1, 1923 to January 1, 2017, for instance--with one entry per day.

The daily entries are pretty short, though, so in addition to recording the diaries, I'm also annotating them, giving additional information about the people, places and events mentioned by Stanford.

And this year, because Stanford is living in Boston, attending Boston University School of Theology, I will be adding information about early 1920s Boston as well as Schenectady.

Through these annotations, I hope to convey a sense of Stanford's life and times. And of course, I'm also hoping to give his descendants a fuller picture of who he was as a young man.
