Overcast, cool and dark with rain off and on all day. Arose 8 A.M. Breakfast and devotions Studied. Dinner. Worked at Ginter Co. 12 M - 2 P.M. To P.O. To School. Studied. Supper. For walk with H.H. Seminar in Greek with H.H. and Chadwick. Talked with John Marshall and Steinkraus. Shower bath. To bed 12 P.M. Thankful for opportunity of an education.

Stopped work at Ginter Co, having completed 260 hours of work. Mr. White, manager. 32 Tremont St. Boston, Mass.

I guess that's it for Ginter's. I wonder what was significant about the number of hours of work Stanford completed?

I've created this blog to make a record of the hand-written journals of Stanford Stillman Closson (1900-1982), who was in his life a Methodist Minister, grandfather, father, brother, husband, son, cousin, nephew and friend. This is the fifth installment of Date Book, covering 1923 (the first four cover 1919-1922). For as long as seems practical, I will record subsequent years (they continue into the 1970s). I'm matching the days--January 1, 1923 to January 1, 2017, for instance--with one entry per day.

The daily entries are pretty short, though, so in addition to recording the diaries, I'm also annotating them, giving additional information about the people, places and events mentioned by Stanford.

And this year, because Stanford is living in Boston, attending Boston University School of Theology, I will be adding information about early 1920s Boston as well as Schenectady.

Through these annotations, I hope to convey a sense of Stanford's life and times. And of course, I'm also hoping to give his descendants a fuller picture of who he was as a young man.
