Cold and snowy. Arose 7 A.M. Made toilet. Breakfast in room. Studied. Classes 9:30 - 11:30. Dinner. Worked 12 M to 2 P.M. Classes and chapel 2:15-4:45 P.M. Supper. Studied. Dressed. To make call on M.L.Y. Pleasant evening. Cocoa, festino etc. To bed 12 P.M. Got brown suit mended in elbow & pressed. Thankful for worldly comforts.

So, Stanford didn't wait too long to call on Mary Leah. That is a good sign, even if he did spend New Year's eve with some other girl.

After some searching, I discovered that festino is a kind of cookie/candy from Nabisco. Below is a 1914 ad that describes that confection and some other popular Nabisco offerings. The only one left these days is the sugar wafer.

I've created this blog to make a record of the hand-written journals of Stanford Stillman Closson (1900-1982), who was in his life a Methodist Minister, grandfather, father, brother, husband, son, cousin, nephew and friend. This is the fifth installment of Date Book, covering 1923 (the first four cover 1919-1922). For as long as seems practical, I will record subsequent years (they continue into the 1970s). I'm matching the days--January 1, 1923 to January 1, 2017, for instance--with one entry per day.

The daily entries are pretty short, though, so in addition to recording the diaries, I'm also annotating them, giving additional information about the people, places and events mentioned by Stanford.

And this year, because Stanford is living in Boston, attending Boston University School of Theology, I will be adding information about early 1920s Boston as well as Schenectady.

Through these annotations, I hope to convey a sense of Stanford's life and times. And of course, I'm also hoping to give his descendants a fuller picture of who he was as a young man.
