Cold & blustery with snow. Arose 7:30 A.M. Breakfast etc. Odd jobs. To depot with truck & touring trunks and people. Sister Ruth & brother-in-law Mark otherwise known as Mr. & Mrs. Sawyer left for California via New York Washington, New Orleans and El Paso. Dinner. Downstreet. Bowled, Shower at "Y." etc. Supper. Candled eggs. Played dominoes with father & H.H. Talked. To bed 11 P.M. Thank God for home.

So the Sawyers are off to California! They have a long journey ahead of them, presumably by train. They would have traveled on the Southern Pacific Railway from New Orleans to Los Angeles, presumably on the Sunset Limited. Below is an ad that appeared in the January 6, 1923 edition of the Literary Digest magazine, promoting a trip from New Orleans at Mardi Gras time.

I've created this blog to make a record of the hand-written journals of Stanford Stillman Closson (1900-1982), who was in his life a Methodist Minister, grandfather, father, brother, husband, son, cousin, nephew and friend. This is the fifth installment of Date Book, covering 1923 (the first four cover 1919-1922). For as long as seems practical, I will record subsequent years (they continue into the 1970s). I'm matching the days--January 1, 1923 to January 1, 2017, for instance--with one entry per day.

The daily entries are pretty short, though, so in addition to recording the diaries, I'm also annotating them, giving additional information about the people, places and events mentioned by Stanford.

And this year, because Stanford is living in Boston, attending Boston University School of Theology, I will be adding information about early 1920s Boston as well as Schenectady.

Through these annotations, I hope to convey a sense of Stanford's life and times. And of course, I'm also hoping to give his descendants a fuller picture of who he was as a young man.
