Fair and cold. Arose 7 A.M. Breakfast. Shower etc. To Beverly on 9:30 A.M. train. Morning service. S.S. Dinner with Smallees, Pond Street. Calling with Cameron. E.L. Evening service. Last of series of four. 5 People came forward. Splendid meeting. Talked. To bed 12:30 A.M. Thankful for experience at Beverly.

I think the Smallees are Cora and William, who did live in Beverly in 1910, but I'm not sure they're the ones he is referring to.

I think Stanford may be getting some practice preaching at Beverly.

I've created this blog to make a record of the hand-written journals of Stanford Stillman Closson (1900-1982), who was in his life a Methodist Minister, grandfather, father, brother, husband, son, cousin, nephew and friend. This is the fifth installment of Date Book, covering 1923 (the first four cover 1919-1922). For as long as seems practical, I will record subsequent years (they continue into the 1970s). I'm matching the days--January 1, 1923 to January 1, 2017, for instance--with one entry per day.

The daily entries are pretty short, though, so in addition to recording the diaries, I'm also annotating them, giving additional information about the people, places and events mentioned by Stanford.

And this year, because Stanford is living in Boston, attending Boston University School of Theology, I will be adding information about early 1920s Boston as well as Schenectady.

Through these annotations, I hope to convey a sense of Stanford's life and times. And of course, I'm also hoping to give his descendants a fuller picture of who he was as a young man.
